Cancer Vignettes
I. Waiting
I am waiting
for the incandescent moon to
wonder-spill
in delicate petals
against the cavernous sky
I am leaning
into a better day like
a hungry wolf whose
jaws cannot be loosened
So let’s go back
to the dazzling light
which better suits
my sadness
This unexpected turn into
the backward waters
this chime of a clock
bidding me to shore up
my bones
for another battle
bring myself
into wellness
and then again
the flowering of my face
as I look upward
expecting barren lunar gardens
to bloom voraciously
Viñetas sobre el Cáncer
I. Esperando
Estoy esperando
que la luna incandescente
se derrame
en delicados pétalos
contra el cielo cavernoso
Me inclino
hacia un día mejor como
un lobo hambriento cuyas
mandíbulas no pueden aflojarse
Así que volvamos
a la deslumbrante luz
que mejor se adapta a
mi tristeza
Este giro inesperado hacia
las aguas turbulentas
esta campanada de un reloj
que me ordena reforzar
mis huesos
para otra batalla
que me lleve
al bienestar
y de nuevo
al florecimiento de mi rostro
mientras miro hacia arriba
esperando que los estériles jardines lunares
florezcan vorazmente
II. A Day
With my breast now bruised
purple, from needles
and the hustle of urgent fear
A day when the sun sits
In refusal but still
tiny shoots of green persist
in shouldering their way
up from the cold, hard earth
The deer have disappeared
finding fodder in woods
unladen of snow
March ends
with a humph, a growl
a disdain, while the cycle
of my inner world hums
like a train set loose
on the trail of night.
II.
Marzo termina
con un zumbido, un gruñido
un desdén, mientras el ciclo
de mi mundo interior zumba
como un tren suelto
en el rastro de la noche.
III. The Wind, Again
The unsullied
touch of a drifting Goddess
mouths your skin
but you are trapped
by the clattering
traffic, hounded by sirens
and cars sputtering
upon the asphalt streets
Ah but the
wind re-enters your body
a conduit of Earth’s breath
an aloneness worth seeking
blankets your inner chatter
and complaint
you palpitate
beyond the predator
that returns to bite
your breast with
unforeseen malice
III. El viento, otra vez
El toque inmaculado
de una diosa a la deriva
te roza la piel
pero estás atrapada
por el movimiento
del tránsito, acosada por sirenas
y los autos chisporroteando
sobre las calles de asfalto
Ah, pero el viento
vuelve a entrar en tu cuerpo
un conducto del aliento de la Tierra
una soledad que vale la pena buscar
cobija tu charla interior
y tus quejas
palpitas
más allá del depredador
que vuelve a morder
tu pecho con
malicia imprevista
IV. Luminous
Turkeys on the road
Geese in the creek
The deer are wild-free
headed towards the piney woods
and the door knocks
the footstep thuds
the sun
takes a soft bite out of the creamy sky
In luminous caves
nighttime creatures patter
stars cough up the
jet-black sky and
a starfish tumor embedded in my breast
fingers my future
Accept accept
move on move on
douse the fire of grief
with showers
of laughing geese winging
from above
IV. Luminoso
Pavos en la carretera
gansos en el arroyo
Los ciervos libres
se dirigen al bosque de pinos
y la puerta suena
la pisada retumba
el sol muerde
suavemente el cielo cremoso
en cuevas luminosas
las criaturas nocturnas revolotean
las estrellas salpican el
cielo oscuro y
un tumor-estrella de mar incrustado en mi pecho
juega con mi futuro
aceptar aceptar
continuar continuar
apagar el fuego de la pena
con lluvias
de gansos risueños que vuelan
allá arriba
VI. Breastless
I am like the warrior
Queen Inanna
my feet sunk into the ground
my shield a golden sphere
of protection
Blunt iron masks my face
for who will
pierce my belongings?
But I am already done
with this battle
my emptiness acute
my pain poised to
transport me
where gratitude strikes
the day forward; I am not sorry for
what has been done
but this is one time
that will not be dreamed back
I am like the warrior
Queen Inanna
I was born to dive deep
into the darkness
and return to myself as
whole as I can hope to be.
VI. Sin seno
Soy como la guerrera
Reina Inanna
mis pies hundidos en la tierra
mi escudo una esfera dorada
de protección
El hierro cubre mi rostro
porque ¿quién
atravesará mis bienes?
Pero ya terminé
con esta batalla
mi vacío agudiza
mi dolor a punto de
transportarme
donde la gratitud lleva consigo
el día que llega; no me arrepiento de
lo que se ha hecho
pero este es un tiempo
que no volverá a ser soñado
Soy como la guerrera
Reina Inanna
Nací para sumergirme
en la oscuridad
y volver a mí tan
tan completa como pueda esperar ser

21 days before you lose your right breast
Look at the budding acorn tree in your

Think about
how bare it looked 2 weeks ago
Tell yourself “Things can happen”
Ask the chortling birds where song
comes from because you are
looking for your own tune desperately
Is that an oriole?
A robin? A flitting female cardinal?
Cross your legs. Then uncross them
as you sit in a sea of white violets
speckled by their purple cousins
Ponder your inability to cry
how you prefer to search out
the pockets of anger
Say the F word several times
Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck
Maybe it’s not a 6 after all

I love the “wonder-spill” of these poems, and the unbridled passion of the Inanna self revealing herself to us, a gift of journeying through adversity, “wild-free” and rich. The collage is beautiful, as always. So loved reading these poems today. Thank you Corinne.

The nature imagery of Corinne’s cancer vignettes takes my breath away. It allows me to feel the depths of the emotions, anguish and hope among them, that accompany the awareness of disease in the body. The translations by Marjha recreate the transcendence threaded through the original versions with beautifully expressive Spanish vocabulary. The goddess and female warrior, resistance and strength, uplift and fortify me. Thank you, Corinne and Marjha, for gifting me with these poems! The collage suits them perfectly.
